Wired and Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

Cable or radio, we install both and help you choose.

A fire alarm can be connected by cable or by radio, and either can protect a commercial building properly when it is designed and installed well. The difference lies in how each one suits the premises it goes into. At Incognito Systems, we install both wired and wireless fire alarm systems across Northamptonshire, and we recommend whichever fits your building after a free site survey.

Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

Fewer cables, quicker installation.
Wireless systems use radio signals to link the detectors and call points to the control panel, so there is far less cabling to run. That makes them a strong choice for older and listed buildings, where drilling through thick walls or decorative ceilings is unwelcome, and for businesses that need to keep trading during the work. Installation is quicker and quieter, and adding a device later only means pairing it with the panel.

Wired Fire Alarm Systems

Powered through cables & built for larger sites.
Wired systems link every device to the control panel by fire-resistant cable, which also carries power, so there are no batteries in the detectors to replace. They suit larger sites and new builds, where cabling goes in as the building takes shape and can be routed without disturbing anyone. In an occupied building the work is more disruptive, as cable has to be run through ceilings and walls.

Choosing Between Them

Three things usually decide it.

The Building
Age and construction matter most, along with size. Thick stone and steel frames can weaken a radio signal, so we check signal strength on site before recommending wireless. Larger buildings with room for cabling often suit wired.

The Disruption
If you can't close, or the building can't take new cable routes, wireless usually wins. If the building is empty or still being built, wired is often simpler.

The Upkeep
Wireless devices run on batteries that need replacing on a schedule, while wired detectors have none. Our maintenance packages cover either type, with scheduled testing to BS5839 and full records.

Why Choose Incognito Systems

Our fire alarm work is SSAIB accredited, so it is independently inspected, and every system we install is completed to BS5839. We install both types, which means our recommendation is based on your building rather than on what we happen to offer. The same approach carries into maintenance, with scheduled visits and logged findings, plus reactive callouts between services.

Wireless Fire Alarms

Is a wireless fire alarm as reliable as a wired one?

Either type can protect a building properly when it is designed and installed to BS5839. Wireless devices stay in contact with the control panel, which flags a low battery or a lost signal, and our maintenance visits check both.

How often do wireless detector batteries need replacing?

It varies by manufacturer and device. We check battery condition at every maintenance visit and replace batteries before they become a problem.

Can a wireless system cover a large building?

Often, yes, but a radio survey comes first. Very large sites, or buildings with thick masonry and a lot of steel, can suit cabling better, which is why we check signal strength on site before recommending anything.

Can you add wireless devices to an existing wired system?

Sometimes. It depends on the panel and the manufacturer, so we look at the existing system during the survey and tell you what is possible.

Which costs less, wired or wireless?

It depends on the building. Wireless often saves on labour because there is less cabling to run, while wired can work out better on a large new build where cable goes in anyway. You get a clear quote after the survey.

Does the choice affect compliance?

No. Either type has to meet BS5839 and be inspected and tested regularly, so the obligation to maintain the system is the same whichever you choose.

Do you cover businesses outside of Northampton?

Our fire alarm work covers businesses throughout Northamptonshire, including Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough and Rushden. For larger commercial projects we also work further afield, so get in touch to discuss your location.
