How to Tell if Your CCTV Cameras Need Replacing or Just Repositioning
When CCTV stops performing as expected, the instinct is often to assume the cameras need replacing. Sometimes that is true. Frequently, however, the issue is not the equipment itself but where it has been placed, how it has been configured or what has changed in the environment around it since installation. At Incognito Systems, we regularly assess existing CCTV systems and find that the solution is more straightforward than the customer expected.
If your cameras are producing good-quality images in some conditions but not others, the issue is likely environmental rather than technical. Cameras pointed into direct sunlight at certain times of day will produce washed-out footage regardless of their specification. Cameras mounted too high or at the wrong angle may cover a large area but fail to capture faces or number plates at a usable resolution.
Physical changes around the camera are another common culprit. Trees and shrubs that have grown since installation, new signage, additional equipment or changes to the building layout can all create blind spots that did not exist when the system was first set up. In these cases, repositioning or adding a camera to fill the gap is a more cost-effective solution than a full replacement.
Age is the clearest indicator. CCTV technology has advanced considerably over the last several years, and cameras that were considered adequate at installation may now produce footage that falls short of what is needed for identification or evidence purposes. If your system is more than five or six years old and was not high specification to begin with, the gap between what it delivers and what current cameras offer is likely to be significant.
Physical deterioration is another sign. Cameras that are producing intermittent footage, showing discolouration or struggling in low light conditions they previously handled well are telling you something about their condition. Persistent faults that keep recurring after maintenance visits suggest a component that is reaching the end of its reliable life.
Rather than guessing, a proper assessment of your existing CCTV installation gives you a clear picture of what is underperforming and why. That distinction matters because the right answer is different in each case, and replacing cameras that simply need moving is an unnecessary expense.
