A Beginner’s Guide to Motion Detection for Cameras & Alarms

Motion detectors are vital to any security system, as they can detect potential intruders through movement alone. Upon detection, they can activate CCTV recording, trigger alarms, and turn on lights within moments of a break-in.

However, to those setting up their first security system, the technology behind motion detection devices can seem complicated. In this article, we’ll provide you with a complete guide to motion detection systems, highlighting how they work and why they’re so effective.

What do motion detectors do?

To put it simply, motion detectors are devices that detect movement in specific areas. They can alert home or business owners of an intrusion and act as a deterrent for any burglars sniffing around the property.

When unauthorised motion is detected by the device, its sensor will send a signal to a control unit. This will trigger a response, usually in the form of sounding an alarm or turning on a light.

Motion detectors are a key part of modern home security systems as they can be seamlessly integrated into pre-existing setups. They tend to be wireless with remote monitoring capabilities, so you can keep tabs on what’s going on in your home or business with ease.

Types of motion detection technology

Passive infrared (PIR)

Passive infrared motion detectors work by picking up infrared radiation emitted by warm objects within their detection zone,  including people and animals.

PIR devices contain two sensors, one of which will be activated more than the other if a warm object moves across the field of view. This will trigger the other sensor, activating a light or an alarm.

PIR devices are favoured by many homes and businesses because of their affordability, reliability, and energy efficiency.

Microwave sensors

Microwave sensors contain transmitters that emit microwave pulses across a detection zone. The device’s receiver then analyses the reflected waves that bounce back from objects within the zone.

If an object moves, the frequency of the reflected waves will change, alerting the device and triggering a light or alarm.

Microwave sensors tend to be more expensive than PIR detectors as they cover larger areas. This makes them suitable for larger spaces, such as warehouses and open-plan offices.

Dualtech PIR

Dualtech PIR works by combining heat and microwave detectors, which only activate when both types of sensors within the unit are triggered. As a result, false alarms are greatly reduced.

Dual Technology Detectors are ideal for more hostile environments such as conservatories or garages. The use of a PIR and microwave technology in one means that false alarms are reduced. Additionally, the detector can maintain intruder catch performance even when the environment experiences temperature changes.

As the technology in dualtech detectors is more advanced than the previous two options, it’s a more expensive option. However, as part of this expense, you’ll receive a more sophisticated level of motion detection, too.

Where are motion detectors used?

Cameras

Motion detectors are often found connected directly to CCTV cameras. When the sensor detects movement, it will trigger the camera to begin recording or to enable a PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) camera to focus on the area the motion/intrusion was detected. Additionally, it will also send an immediate alert to the property owner or monitoring company. This allows them to remotely check whether the motion was caused by an intruder, and to initiate a quick response.

Alarms

Motion detectors are installed as part of a burglar alarm system in residential and commercial properties. When unauthorised movement is detected, the alarm will be triggered, letting the intruder know that their presence has been noticed.

Lights

Motion triggered lights containing a basic PIR are a very common (and effective) security measure found in both residential and commercial properties. If movement is detected, the light will switch on, exposing the intruder in clear, bright light.

The lights act as an effective deterrent, especially when paired with a CCTV system.

Installing motion detectors

When it comes to installing motion detection systems, strategy is key. Fail to set up your device in the correct area and you will be compromising its effectiveness.

Here are some points to consider for installation:

  • Entry points: You’ll want to place your device in view of potential entry points as this is where the initial motion is most likely to come from.
  • Corners: By placing the detector in the corner, you are increasing the field of view to the entire room.
  • Away from furniture: Try not to place the detector above large pieces of furniture, as they may impede the view of the device.
  • Away from heat vents: If you’re using a PIR detector, they shouldn’t be near heat vents, as the warmth may be picked up by the sensors.
  • Height: Height is key when installing a motion detection device, as it both widens the view and makes the device difficult for the intruder to spot.

Pros and cons of motion detectors

Pros

  • Wide area coverage: Motion detectors can cover large areas, which is ideal for warehouses or large homes.
  • System integration: Integrating a motion detection device into a pre-existing home security setup is straightforward, especially as most modern motion detectors are wireless.
  • Excellent deterrent: Some motion detectors can be connected to a speaker to deliver audible messages, warning potential intruders that they are being watched – which provides an effective deterrent.

Cons

  • False alarms: Unfortunately, incorrectly specified or installed motion detectors have a higher rate of false alarms than other devices, as they can be triggered by wind, heating vents and insects.
  • Require special measures: If you have pets roaming into motion detection zones, you will have to ensure the detectors are set with special measures to avoid alarms being triggered.
  • Specific placement requirements: If you fail to get the placement strategy of your motion detection device correct, it will not be effective.
